Something Like Love by Beverly JenkinsMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was excited to read the story of one of the July twins. I have read this book twice and the second time was even better than the first. Who knew that Neil July could be so passionate and loving. This story shows a different side of the twins that we are accustom to from previous stories. Olivia Sterling ran away from home to avoid a marriage, arranged by her father. Olivia, a seamstress, business owner and elected mayor of Henry Adams. Neil is a Seminole that encounters Olivia, while him and his brother are robbing a train. Neil only takes a locket from her and tells her that she owns him a kiss for not robbing her of all her valuables, which he knows she has hidden. Again, they encounter each other, when the twins ran down a stagecoach that Olivia was riding on and after Olivia develops heat stroke, Neil takes her into town to see a doctor. Olivia thought this was the end of seeing Neil, but low and behold, he could not stay away from the woman he was so captivated by, that he secretly paid Olivia visits that turned into passion and romance. One night, Neil gets shot by the saloon owner, Armstead Malloy, seeking the reward money and out of pure jealousy, because he wanted Olivia for himself. Neil’s reasoning for robbing was that he was a Seminole, and the government betrayed his people, leaving them to starve. Robbing was a way of feeding his people making him a most wanted man. Although bounty hunters were seeking Neil out, and the judge is on his way to Henry Adams for Neil’s trail, Neil refuse to attempt an escape, due to his promise to Olivia.
Olivia is torn between upholding the law in the town and loving an outlaw, however, being mayor did not keep her from standing by Neil no matter what. I love how Neil’s trail came out and the story of their secretive passion. Beverly Jenkins has reference of historical authenticity, which gave so much meaning to the story. Although, these two had opposite occupations, they made a good match. I truly enjoyed this book and I like reading that Carla Lee and Chase Jefferson from Night Song were also in the story, along with Preacher, Griffin and Jackson Blake. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars, it is one of my favorites.
My Choice of Casting:
• Jordin Sparks as Olivia Sterling
• Herly Ulyssee as Neil July
• Kevin Hart as Armstead Malloy
