Review: Night Song

Night Song Night Song by Beverly Jenkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cara Henson, schoolteacher, “sassy, educated and opinionated, she’d called herself.” Alone with no family left, Cara took care of herself. Sergeant Chase Jefferson, Buffalo Solider of the tenth Cavalry, handsome, bold and brave has no interest in settling down and being a husband. Until he meets Cara. Although, their first encounter was shaky and Cara had no intentions for Chase, but that later changed. Cara was innocent, so I was surprised at his persistence, considering he had been warned by a few of the people in town that cared about Cara’s reputation. Also, with the clause in her teaching contract, doing anything immoral could cause Cara her position.

I thought Miles Sutton was one of the worst villains in any of the books I have read by Beverly Jenkins. Sutton had no morals or values and committed some of the most horrendous crimes against his own people. Frankly, he just did not care. It shocked me at first to see that these folks did not lock their doors, knowing there was a villain out there that could walk in on them at any moment, however, in those times people did not lock their doors.  When Cara’s friend, William, walked into their home and then into the bedroom, I was a bit taken back, because why would anybody walk into someone’s bedroom even if the doors were unlocked. However, I think I understand the emphasis in the writing, showing trust, regardless of the situation.

The love connection between Cara and Chase developed well in this story. Even though Chase had no intent of settling down and being a husband, but his heart and soul went out to Cara. I think they had an unconditional and passionate love. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.  This was a very good read.
