Josephine by Beverly JenkinsMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
After reading Belle, this one is my favorite between the two. I enjoyed hearing Josephine’s story. All grown up, 17 years old, business owner, has already attended Oberlin College, independent and full of spunk. Josephine Best is not looking for a suitor, but two is knocking at her door. George Brooks, one of the soldiers staying in town and Adam Morgan, also a soldier, but her brother Daniel’s best friend. She doesn’t know George very well, but what she does find out, that he believes in the tradition of a woman’s place is in the home and the man is the head of the household. That right there is not sitting well with JoJo, she is a lot like her mother and being ruled by a man is not her forte. On the other hand, she has known Adam all her life and he is aware of the Best women and their fierce independence. There relationship starts off rocky because of their childhood attachment; Woodenhead and Pest the names they called each other as kids and continues to do so throughout their interaction. However, their attraction and love for each other grows.
I recommend this book. It was a nice sweet love story. The read was comforting and the story well written. I still value Cecilia Best from reading Belle most of all, she is the backbone of her family. Her character is the epidemy of strength and motherhood. The mother-daughter relationship between Cecilia and JoJo is inseparable. What I also like about this story was the forgiveness and compassion between the characters, such as the confrontation between Mrs. Donovan and JoJo and between Trudy and Bert. I was happy to see misunderstandings resolved and the characters coming together for good. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. My favorite in the YA series.
