Review: Canyon

Canyon Canyon by Brenda Jackson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This story is about the misunderstanding between two people. Canyon Westmoreland and Keisha Ashford. Not telling Canyon that he had a child I felt was completely wrong, it was no excuse, not even Keisha’s hurt feelings. There are too many times the parent’s personal conflicts with each other, that the children deal with the consequences. I am team Beau in this story, the son of Canyon and Keisha.

This was a pretty good book, but I fail to understand the degree of mental illness with Bonita that caused Canyon and Keisha to break up. Two separate things all together, although it was a cause and effect. Keisha believing Bonita over Canyon was understandable based on what she saw. The whole scene was not in Canyon’s favor. However, Keisha never questioned, why or what, seeing her best friend in her bed and Canyon naked with just a towel around him. Even when it was explained by Canyon, Keisha was too hurt to listen. What she saw is what she thought, so it was obvious to believe Bonita over Canyon. But, if Bonita did not have a mental illness, then what would be the reasoning? That is what Keisha fail to find out; the reasoning behind this incident.
This story hit a lot of emotional avenues; inability to forgive, self-doubt, blame, mental illness and the lack of communication. How everything played out, they were destined to be together. I did not like the mystery part of this book, for me it just did not connect. It just seems like the reasoning did not match the crime. For example: There was no explanation of why Bonita chose to make it appear she slept with Canyon, other than her mental status; I was looking for more explanation and Keisha co-worker trying to scare her off and attempting to kidnap her was a bit over the top. His actions just did not make sense to me. If anyone had mental health issues, I would say it was him, although it was not clarified in the book, but it was obvious.

I give this book a 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. I don’t think I will re-read this one. But, I did enjoy that they came together as a family. I like that Canyon took charge as being Beau’s father without hesitation.
