Review: Bayou Magic

Bayou Magic Bayou Magic by Jewell Parker Rhodes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book for the Black-Oween-athon for October 2020 in the category of a book by a Black author that features Black Mermaids/Sirens.

This was a coming of age story about a little girl, Maddy that visits her grandmere for the summer in the Bayou. This book is filled with adventure, magic and the special relationship between Maddy and her grandmother. This story reminds me of some of the old sayings and signs that my grandmother told me. The Bayou was different from the city that Maddy was so use too. Yet, she adapted very well unlike her sisters that had previously visited Grandmere and the Bayou. The relationship between a granddaughter and grandmother is a different type of closeness. Like a lot of people say, “grandparents are easy on their grandchildren then their own children” and I guess that is true to a point. What we learned raising our children, makes us wise when teaching our grandchildren; using knowledge and having more patience.

Maddy’s adventure of the black mermaid, the fireflies and her gift, that is past down to her from generation. It is an intriguing story, one of fantasy and truth. I am not going to say a lot about this story right now, because I have two copies of this book and I am giving one to my granddaughter which is 11 years old. I think she would enjoy it. I plan to do a re-read with my granddaughter, to discuss and study the history & contents that are mention in the book. So far, I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars. Later, I will do another review; more detailed. Great book and I highly recommend.
