Review: Bane

Bane Bane by Brenda Jackson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first of Brenda Jackson’s books I have read, and it is the last of the Westmoreland series, so I missed out on all the previous ones. I am way behind, but better late than never. Good thing about this book, I did not feel I missed anything from not reading the previous books. This one stood on its own.

Bane was the only person that Crystal could trust and after five years, thank God he appeared at the time she needed him the most. Crystal, a Biochemist working on her PhD., was a target for a kidnapping because of her high security lab research. Brisbane Westmoreland, a Navy SEAL and the love of Crystal’s life has been gone to the military for five years without any communication with Crystal. Hoping for a second chance in their relationship Bane shows up like he promises to one day come to get her. However, Crystal is in danger. Between rekindling their secret relationship and Bane doing everything he knows and can to protect her. They are on an adventure and on the run. Aside from the romance, which did not seem to take place until half-way through the book. It was a plot of suspense; kidnapping, murder, action and danger. It was interesting, and I enjoyed the suspense and the dedication and support of Bates military team, friends and family.

What seem redundant or me is when Crystal kept preaching about the five years, they were apart. I get it, I understand, Crystal felt abandon, regardless of Bane’s promise, 5-years was a bit much. However, they both had an opportunity to reach out to each other in those five years. Yes, Bane should have reached out to her, but he thought he was doing the right thing. She longed for him and wanted him, so when he finally showed up, she wants to bitch about five years. I heard it so much in the audio, it started to get on my nerves. I said to myself, if I hear the words, “five years” one more time….

The audio was good, except the narrator made Crystal sound wimpy. I know she was somewhat of a nerd, but damn, the narrator needed to put some softness in the voice, she sounded like a nervous wrack even in the sex scene. However, Crystal seemed a bit naive and she was nervous, so maybe that is why the narrator had her sounding timid vs. passionate. Ijs

Overall, this was a good book. I enjoyed the read and I recommend. I would consider to re-read, mostly because I enjoyed Bane’s character. I give it a 4 Star ★★★★

Cast:
 Louis Allen III (of course) as Brisbane Westmoreland
 Sanaa Lathan as Crystal Newsome
